Getting Started With Facebook Ads

Facebook is greatly underestimated when it comes to advertising – many people will tell you that Facebook ads just don’t work. What they don’t realize is that one out of every $10 that is spent on advertising is spent on Facebook. This is proof that it works if it is set up correctly. The great thing about advertising on this social media website is that it is cheap – you can set up ads for as little as $5 a day. It is also the best way to get targeted traffic – while setting up ads you get to select your target demographic. Here is how you should go about setting up your first Facebook ad.

There are two ways that you can manage your ads – through the Facebook Ads Manager and the Power Editor. As a beginner the Facebook Ads Manager is probably the best place to begin – it is very straightforward. It allows you to set up new campaigns, create new ads within them, manage how much you want to spend, edit your campaigns as they are running and also track and test campaigns. When you set up your account it will have within it campaigns, and within the campaigns there will be ad sets and within these there will be ads. You can have multiple campaigns running at the same time – it is all determined by your budget and your goals.

Step 1

Start by defining your goals – what do you want to achieve with your ads campaign? It can be anything – increase traffic to your site, recruit people to an event, promote a new product, increase awareness on an existing one or even increase the level of engagement on your Facebook page.

Step 2

Click on the Facebook Ads Manager and choose your objective – you can choose between awareness, consideration and conversion, and each is a package with different benefits. It is advisable to start with awareness – for a dollar a day worth of ads research has shown that you can get up to 4,000 new followers in a month.

Step 3

This one involves choosing your target audience, and it is important that you think about this one carefully. You get to choose the location, age, languages, interests, behaviors and connections of the people that you want to reach. You also get to choose your budget, which is the maximum amount of money that you want to pay for your campaign for a fixed amount of time. You can choose a daily budget or you can choose a lifetime budget.

Step 4

Create your ad. You can choose text and video (text is limited because you get only 90 characters). You can choose an existing post or you can create one from scratch – it is all up to you. There are 5 different formats that you can use and you are limited to certain specs.

Step 5

Select ad placement, which is where your ad will appear on Facebook – mobile news feed, desktop news feed and right column. You also have the option to have your ads appear on Instagram. You can also allow Facebook to choose your placement, and this works better because they will place it in the most appropriate place.

Step 6

The last step is to place your order, after which you will get a confirmation email.

Don’t forget to tweak the settings on your campaign from time to time to see which setting works best.

Facebook ads work very well if they are properly placed and managed. If you don’t feel that you can create effective ads it is best to hire a digital marketing company to run your Facebook ads campaign.
